Why do we need to take plastic pollution seriously?
Unmasking the Plastic Pandemic: A Call to Action
Did you know that a staggering 300 million tons of plastic are churned out annually, with a disheartening 8 million tons finding its way into our oceans? Through my global travels, I've witnessed firsthand the devastating impact of this plastic deluge on marine life.
The toll is heart-wrenching! Seabirds, whales, and turtles fall victim to plastic waste, mistaking it for sustenance and paying the ultimate price. Nets and bags become lethal traps, leading to suffocation and starvation.
Yet, the menace doesn't end there. Plastic's legacy is enduring, with items like bags and bottles taking centuries to decompose. What seems like a momentary convenience in our daily lives translates into perpetual pollution in our ecosystems.
In this journey towards sustainable travel, we must embrace recycling as a powerful ally while actively curbing our dependence on plastic. It's a collective responsibility to reduce, reuse, and replace plastic items with eco-friendly alternatives. Together, we can rewrite the narrative, ushering in an era where our oceans are free from the shackles of plastic pollution. Join the movement, be the change!
A while back I came across a Dutch company called Saywhatbottles committed to fighting against the plastic pollution that kills animals every year. I am very impressed with their efforts and innovative ideas on how each one of us can contribute to this cause.
How does SayWhatBottles do it?
SayWhat fights plastic pollution in different ways aside from educating people; they designed a line of personalized reusable bottles called the Saywhat Bottles & flasks. These unique bottles can be personalized with your name or text. In addition, they have created a Saywhat business collection specializing in printing and engraving thermos flasks with logos for companies as sustainable promotional and corporate gifts.
Saywhat have teamed up with the Olive Ridley Project. This is a foundation that takes in injured and sick sea turtles, cares for them and eventually releases them back into the ocean if possible. Saywhat has adopted turtles such as Ash to help the foundation financially. Ash is a juvenile hawksbill turtle found entangled in a ghost net by the people of Thoddoo. Thankfully they were able to save him.
And the best part? They don't stop there!
When you purchase a sustainable drinking bottle from their new capsule collection each featuring its animal, you directly contribute to the welfare of millions of animals. Saywhat has teamed up with World Animal Protection (WAP) and they will donate €5 to World Animal Protection for each WAP bottle sold! How amazing is that!
TAKEAWAY: Next time you travel get your reusable water bottle! This is not only cheaper and more comfortable when you're on the go. This is a great way to be plastic-free!
Additional Tips For Sustainable Travel And Being Plastic-Free
To reduce the use of plastic bags, make an easy adjustment and have a foldable linen bag with you. Using a reusable bag means you use about 170 plastic bags less per year! Crazy, right?
Don't pack items such as shoes in your luggage using plastic bags.
Toothbrushes and hairbrushes are made of plastic, you can easily exchange such everyday/travel items for a bamboo toothbrush or hairbrush. Bamboo grows very quickly and is extremely strong and like other natural materials, it simply decays over time.
Bring your own snacks onboard: Have you noticed just how much plastic there is on your airline food tray?
Next time you travel please don’t buy travel-size toiletries! Instead, pack your own using reusable containers you have at home.
Be mindful of waste.
Make sure you never leave any waste behind you. Seeing places after people had a picnic for example with all that garbage left behind is heartbreaking.
BONUS TIP: When purchasing sunscreen make sure it is not a chemical sunscreen that is damaging our oceans and reefs and opt to buy natural sunscreen.
