Here are five fun facts about the enchanting island of Corfu:

Royal Connection: Corfu has a regal history! The island served as the birthplace of Prince Philip, the Duke of Edinburgh, in 1921. The Royal Palace of Corfu, known as Mon Repos, is where this significant event took place.
Koum Kouat Delight: Corfu is renowned for its local specialty, the kumquat. These small, orange-like fruits are unique to the island and are used to make a variety of products, including liqueurs, jams, and sweets. Don't miss the chance to taste kumquat-infused delights during your visit!
Liston Promenade Inspiration: The charming Liston Promenade in Corfu Town draws inspiration from the Rue de Rivoli in Paris. Built during the French occupation in the early 19th century, it has become a popular spot for locals and visitors alike to enjoy coffee, people-watching, and the laid-back Corfiot lifestyle.
Old Town's Esplanade: Corfu Town boasts one of the largest and most well-preserved Venetian fortresses in Europe. Once a Venetian cricket ground, it is now a vast open space surrounded by elegant buildings and is a popular gathering place for locals.

Practical Info:

The Best Times to travel to Corfu: Greece has an amazing Mediterranean climate. Depending on your personal preferences, some would say the ideal times to visit Corfu are during the spring (April to June) and fall (September to October), when the weather is pleasant and the crowds are thinner. Personally, I also enjoy the peak summer months.
Visa: EU citizens do not require a visa. Check visa requirements if you're traveling from outside the EU.
Getting Around Corfu:
- Renting a car is the best way to explore the island. Avoid driving at night, as the roads are pitch black at night. There are close to no lights on the highways and smaller roads outside the towns and villages.
- Local buses are available, connecting major towns and attractions.
Water: DO NOT drink Corfu's tap water! Also, avoid having ice in your drinks.
Accessibility: Corfu's beaches are less accessible than you might be used to if you have been traveling to other Greek islands. In many cases, it's quite a hike up and down or requires going down many flights of stairs. Having said that, it will be worth it!

We chose to stay in Roda, a lovely and cozy village in northern Corfu. Beautiful beaches with a nice boulevard along the beachfront featuring restaurants, bars, and small boutiques. The Greek food is incredible, so don't miss out on having glorious dinners in the local taverns.

Some taverns in Roda feature twice-a-week Greek traditional dancing with typical Greek plate-breaking, which is always fun. It is very easy to explore the island from here, depending on how many days you are staying. I recommend renting a car for at least three days.

A 6-Day Itinerary For Corfu

Day 1-2: When first arriving on any Greek island, I love to chill out for the first two days around the resort, take in the gorgeous sunshine, do a water sport or two, have a massage, and indulge in the local delicacies. Greek beach bliss is the best way to kickstart your Corfu journey!

Roda, it's like stepping into a postcard with traditional charm and beaches that whisper serenity. Grab an iced coffee in one of the many beach cafes, wander the narrow alleys, and let the island vibes sink in.

Day 3: Northbound for History and Sun-Kissed Beaches

Roda is the charming starter: Rise and shine in the quaint village of Roda and hit the road.

Kassiopi: A castle with a View- Picture this: ancient ruins, a harbor that beckons explorers, and the majestic Kassiopi Castle. Get ready for epic views and a stroll through history. Snap away; your Instagram will thank you later!

Kalami: A beach fit for Durrell- Kalami Beach is a haven for sun worshippers and literary hearts alike. This is where Lawrence Durrell penned his masterpieces. Dip your toes, soak up the vibes, and maybe pen your ode to Corfu.

Mount Pantokrator: Top of the World-Onward and upward! Scale the heights of Mount Pantokrator for views that'll steal your breath. Pro tip: Time your visit for sunset-it's pure magic!

Corfu Town: Old Town Wonderland-Corfu Town's UNESCO-listed Old Town is a maze of pastel hues, cozy cafes, and hidden gems. Lose yourself in the labyrinth, snap pics of Venetian architecture, and snag souvenirs from local artisans.

Kanoni and Mouse Island: Panoramic Bliss Kanoni is your ticket to cinematic views of Pontikonisi (Mouse Island) and the Vlacherna Monastery. Some background about these two unique locations: Nestled off the southern tip of Corfu, the tiny, verdant islet known as Mouse Island (Pontikonisi) is a symbol of charm and mystery. Legend has it that the island resembles a petrified ship, a result of the sea god Poseidon's wrath. Its nickname, "Mouse Island," is derived from its minuscule size and the belief that it is a ship belonging to Ulysses transformed by Poseidon.

At the center of Mouse Island stands the quaint Pantokrator Chapel, dedicated to Saint Mary. You can't set foot on the island itself; you can take a boat trip to sail around Pontikonisi, which provides stunning views of the chapel, which is surrounded by lush greenery and the turquoise waters of the Ionian Sea.

Vlacherna Monastery is adjacent to Mouse Island and is a picturesque and iconic Corfiot landmark. The monastery, dedicated to the Virgin Mary, dates back to the 17th century and holds both spiritual and cultural significance for the locals.

How to Get There: Getting to the Vlacherna Monastery is an adventure in itself. Connected to the mainland by a narrow causeway, you can easily reach the monastery on foot from Kanoni, offering breathtaking views of Mouse Island along the way. Take a leisurely stroll and immerse yourself in the serene atmosphere as you approach this architectural gem.

Unique Experience: Once at the monastery, relish the tranquil ambiance, explore the grounds, and take in panoramic views of the surrounding landscapes and the nearby airport runway, a unique juxtaposition of ancient tranquility and modern travel. Whether you're gazing at the distant Mouse Island or exploring the Vlacherna Monastery up close, these landmarks offer a glimpse into the rich history and natural beauty that define Corfu. Ready those cameras! This is postcard material, folks!

Visit Achileion Palace.

Karkira: Village Charm! The village of Karkira is a hidden gem, boasting traditional Corfiot vibes. Stroll through, grab a local bite, and soak in the authentic atmosphere. Local Tip: Dive into Pontikonis for a feast with a view. Fresh seafood and an Aegean sunset? Yes, please!

Day 4: Cliffside Wonders and Secluded Beach Bliss

Start your day at the Kanali tou Erota: Canal of Love: The Canal of Love at Sidari is pure romance. Legend has it that couples who swim here stay together forever. Dip your toes or take the plunge; it's your love story! The water and surroundings are simply spectacular!

Akra Drastis: Cliffs and Turquoise Dreams: Akra Drastis is like stepping into another world, with cliffs that defy gravity and waters that shimmer like liquid sapphires. Don't forget your swimwear; this spot is Insta-gold! Prepare yourself for a hike!

Sidari & Agios Georgios: Rock Formations and Beach Bliss: Sidari's unique rock formations are Mother Nature's art. Snap away before heading to Agios Georgios Beach for some R&R under the Grecian sun.

Continue from here to Timoni and Paleokastritsa: A Hike to Paradise. A hike to Timoni reveals the twin beaches of Afionas, a view that'll stay with you. Head to Paleokastritsa for monastery vibes and postcard-perfect scenery. From Paleokastritsa harbor and Alipa beachfront, you can hire boats to sail the gorgeous bays and blue caves.

TOP TIP! Have a late lunch or afternoon drinks or better yet, chase the sunset at La Grotta, a secret bar with cliffside views at the nearby La Grotta restaurant. While you enjoy the stunning views that surround you, dive into the crystal-blue waters. This is one of my favorite spots on this side of the island.

The best cocktail on the menu - An Orio masterpiece!

Agios Spiridon: Serenity Unleashed. Agios Spiridon Beach is the epitome of calm; the scenery is intoxicating.

Liapades, Gefira, and Rovinia: Hidden Beauties -Liapades, Gefira, and Rovinia Beach are the island's hidden treasures. Secluded, serene, and surrounded by nature's embrace, it is perfect for a peaceful escape. Must visit! If you choose just two beaches to visit, make it these two.

Day 5: It’s sailing time!

Take your adventure up a notch by sailing to the island of Paxos to spend the day. Your inner explorer will thank you! Catch a ferry from Corfu to Paxos for a scenic and leisurely journey. The ferry ride itself is an experience, offering breathtaking views of the Ionian Sea. Paxos is a small island, and a day is sufficient to explore its charming villages, beaches, and the famous Blue Caves.

Paxos Island Highlights

Gaios, Lakka, and Loggos: Gaios, the main town, is known for its Venetian architecture and vibrant atmosphere. Lakka and Loggos offer a more laid-back experience. Explore all three for a well-rounded Paxos adventure.
Antipaxos Excursion: Extend your trip with a boat ride to Antipaxos, known for its stunning beaches and crystal-clear waters. Voutoumi and Vrika beaches are particularly popular.
Maximize your exploration by renting a small boat. This allows you to discover secluded coves and hidden beaches and enjoy the flexibility of your schedule.

Day 6: Venture from Corfu Town to Saranda, Albania

Take a ferry from Corfu to Saranda, Albania. The ferry journey offers beautiful views, and Saranda is great for getting a peak into Albania. It will surprise you; I know it surprised me.

Visit Butrint: Explore the ancient city of Butrint, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Its well-preserved ruins showcase layers of history, including Greek, Roman, Byzantine, and Venetian influences.
Blue Eye Spring: Don't miss the Blue Eye Spring, a natural spring with mesmerizing blue hues. It's a short drive from Saranda and provides a refreshing and picturesque stop.
Ksamil Islands: It's a short drive to Ksamil. Enjoy the pristine beaches and visit the nearby Ksamil Islands. The turquoise waters and the unique experience of swimming on the islands are the highlights.
Try traditional Albanian cuisine. Indulge in Albanian culinary delights. Sample local dishes like byrek (savory pastry), tave kosi (yogurt and lamb casserole), and fresh seafood. Saranda's waterfront is dotted with restaurants offering delicious Albanian fare.
NOTE! Be aware that the currency in Albania is the Albanian lek. Have some local currency on hand for smaller establishments and markets.

Remember to check ferry schedules, travel restrictions, and any visa requirements before planning your trips to Paxos and Albania.
